The Passover Celebrated

9 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, ^(A)in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, ² “Let the people of Israel keep the Passover at its appointed time. ^3 (B)On the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight, you shall keep it at its appointed time; according to all its statutes and all its rules you shall keep it.” ⁴ So Moses told the people of Israel that they should keep the Passover. ⁵ And they kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so the people of Israel did. ⁶ And there were certain men who were ^(C)unclean through touching a dead body, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day, and ^(D)they came before Moses and Aaron on that day. ⁷ And those men said to him, “We are unclean through touching a dead body. Why are we kept from bringing the Lord's ^(E)offering at its appointed time among the people of Israel?” ⁸ And Moses said to them, “Wait, that ^(F)I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you.”

⁹ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁰ “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If any one of you or of your descendants is unclean through touching a dead body, or is on a long journey, he shall still keep the Passover to the Lord. ^11 (G)In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight they shall keep it. ^(H)They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. ^12 (I)They shall leave none of it until the morning, ^(J)nor break any of its bones; ^(K)according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it. ¹³ But if anyone who is clean and is not on a journey fails to keep the Passover, ^(L)that person shall be cut off from his people because he did not bring the Lord's ^(M)offering at its appointed time; that man shall bear his sin. ¹⁴ And if a stranger sojourns among you and would keep the Passover to the Lord, according to the statute of the Passover and according to its rule, so shall he do. ^(N)You shall have one statute, both for the sojourner and for the native.”

³ And some of the people of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem: ⁴ Uthai the son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the sons of ^(A)Perez the son of Judah. ⁵ And of the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons. ⁶ Of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and their kinsmen, 690. ⁷ Of the Benjaminites: Sallu the son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah, ⁸ Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, Elah the son of Uzzi, son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah; ⁹ and their kinsmen according to their generations, ^(B)956. All these were heads of fathers' houses according ^(C)to their fathers' houses.

^10 (D)Of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, ¹¹ and Azariah the son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the ^(E)chief officer of the house of God; ¹² and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah, and Maasai the son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer; ¹³ besides their kinsmen, heads of their fathers' houses, 1,760, mighty men for the work of the service of the house of God.

The Lord's Concern for His Holy Name

¹⁶ The word of the Lord came to me: ^17 (A)“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, ^(B)they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were ^(C)like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. ¹⁸ So ^(D)I poured out my wrath upon them ^(E)for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols ^(F)with which they had defiled it. ^19 (G)I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. ^(H)In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. ²⁰ But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, ^(I)they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ ²¹ But I had concern ^(J)for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

²² “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: ^(K)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, ^(L)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. ^23 (M)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. ^(N)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. ^24 (O)I will take you ^(P)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and ^(Q)bring you into your own land. ^25 (R)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from ^(S)all your uncleannesses, and ^(T)from all your idols ^(U)I will cleanse you. ²⁶ And I will give you ^(V)a new heart, and ^(W)a new spirit I will put within you. ^(X)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. ^27 (Y)And I will put my Spirit within you, ^(Z)and cause you to walk in my statutes and ^(AA)be careful to obey my rules.^{[a] 28 (AB)}You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and ^(AC)you shall be my people, and I will be your God. ²⁹ And ^(AD)I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And ^(AE)I will summon the grain and make it abundant and ^(AF)lay no famine upon you. ^30 (AG)I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, ^(AH)that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. ³¹ Then ^(AI)you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. ^32 (AJ)It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

³³ “Thus says the Lord God: On the day that ^(AK)I cleanse you from all your iniquities, ^(AL)I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. ³⁴ And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. ³⁵ And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like ^(AM)the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ ³⁶ Then ^(AN)the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and ^(AO)replanted that which was desolate. ^(AP)I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

³⁷ “Thus says the Lord God: This also ^(AQ)I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: ^(AR)to increase their people like ^(AS)a flock. ³⁸ Like the flock for sacrifices,^{[b] (AT)}like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so ^(AU)shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. ^(AV)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

^31 (A)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, ^(B)we are going up to Jerusalem, and ^(C)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. ³² For he will be ^(D)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be ^(E)mocked and shamefully treated and ^(F)spit upon. ³³ And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on ^(G)the third day he will rise.” ^34 (H)But they understood none of these things. ^(I)This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

^35 (J)As he drew near to Jericho, ^(K)a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. ³⁶ And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. ³⁷ They told him, ^(L)“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” ³⁸ And he cried out, “Jesus, ^(M)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ³⁹ And those who were in front ^(N)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” ⁴⁰ And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, ^41 (O)“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” ⁴² And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; ^(P)your faith has ^(Q)made you well.” ⁴³ And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, ^(R)glorifying God. And ^(S)all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Wives and Husbands

^22 (B)Wives, ^(C)submit to your own husbands, ^(D)as to the Lord. ²³ For ^(E)the husband is the head of the wife even as ^(F)Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is ^(G)himself its Savior. ²⁴ Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit ^(H)in everything to their husbands.

^25 (I)Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and ^(J)gave himself up for her, ²⁶ that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by ^(K)the washing of water ^(L)with the word, ²⁷ so ^(M)that he might present the church to himself in splendor, ^(N)without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.^{[a] 28} In the same way ^(O)husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. ²⁹ For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, ³⁰ because ^(P)we are members of his body. ^31 (Q)“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and ^(R)the two shall become one flesh.” ³² This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. ³³ However, ^(S)let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she ^(T)respects her husband.
